James Edward Jumblatt, Ph.D.

"The excitement of exploration and discovery is what drives research. It's very exciting to find something nobody has known before and uncover its relevance to the big picture... The eye contains every cell type you would ever want to study. And it's all accessible without having to invade tissue or damage the organism. It's a beautiful subject and an important organ for clinical reasons. A lot of diseases can be treated, but still result in a high incidence of blindness."

Dr. James Jumblatt considered himself a classical biochemist, until his wife, Dr. Marcia Jumblatt, lured him into the eye field. Now they often collaborate on research projects, often approaching a problem from different, but complementary analyses.

Although he has previously worked on glaucoma, neurocontrol and intraocular pressure, Dr. Jumblatt now devotes his attention on new treatments for dry eye diseases, a family of diseases which impact a great number of Americans each year. Dr. Jumblatt's lab works to develop ways to enhance the components of tear film for added stability.
