Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences

Residency Program

Dear Applicant,

Our internationally recognized three-year residency program has been approved to increase its contingent from three to four residents per year as of July 2008.  The program is designed for young physician graduates of medical schools approved by the Accrediting Council on Medical Education.

For all levels of training (PGY 2-4), residents are assigned to rotations at the University of Louisville Primary Care Eye Clinic at the Kentucky Lions Eye Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the different subspecialty services at the Kentucky Lions Eye Center – Faculty Private Practice and/or satellite offices.  Training is provided by full and part-time faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.  They include Cornea-External Disease, Uveitis, Contact Lenses, Low Vision, Glaucoma, Oculoplastics and Orbital Reconstruction, Ophthalmic Pathology, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Medical Retina and Vitreo-Retinal Surgery, Refractive Surgery and Neuro-ophthalmology.

Didactic Conferences are held every Friday morning in addition to regular subspecialty conferences, journal clubs, surgical conferences, wetlabs, and sessions in the Fresh Tissue Laboratory.  Residents actively participate in research projects and present their results at the annual Residents Day in June, as well as regional and national meetings.

Prior to starting the residency, it is required that physician candidates attain one year of training (PGY-1) in which the resident has primary responsibility for patient care in fields such as internal medicine, neurology, pediatrics, surgery, family practice, or emergency medicine.  As a minimum, 6 months of this year must be a broad experience in direct patient care.  A medical license to practice in the state of Kentucky is also required.

Our program participates in the San Francisco Match.  If you are interested in applying to our Residency Training Program, please go to www.sfmatch.org

If you have additional questions, please contact the Residency Program Coordinator, Debby McCurdy, at 502-852-0710 or damccu01@gwise.louisville.edu.
